LSD inventor Albert Hofmann dies at 102

200x190.jpgThe man who invented LSD has died of a heart attack at the age of 102.

Albert Hofmann, from Switzerland, discovered the hallucinogenic drug in 1938 and hoped his invention would lead to treatment of mental illness patients.

But it had only been when the chemist accidentally consumed some of the drug he realised the effects it could have, saying of his experience: "Everything I saw was distorted as in a warped mirror."
He went on to see his creation become a popular street drug of the 1960s with rock stars among its users. But by the end of the 60s the drug had been made illegal in many courtries after it was found to leave some users with psychological damage.

Hofmann died at his home in Burg im Leimental, a village near Basel. He is survived by a son and daughter. His wife and their other two children died before him.
