Swiss TV played 'Nazi' anthem for Euro 2008

200x190.jpgBlundering bosses at a Swiss TV station ran the lyrics to the banned 'Nazi version' of German anthem during their Euro 2008 clash with Austria.

As fans in the stadium sang the official version, channel SRG displayed subtitles for the old ultra-nationalistic first verse - not used since the fall of the Third Reich.

The words "Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles" (Germany, Germany above everything) which were popular during Nazi rule, were displayed on millions of TVs but this is not what was being sung by players and fans.

They sang "Unity and justice and liberty for the German fatherland" which has been the official version since unification in 1990.

SRG say inexperienced researchers copied the lyrics from the internet.
One german fan said: "People could not believe what they were seeing, it is illegal to sing that version in Germany and the only people who do are theneo-Nazis."
