Big bang experiment begins, world still okay
Scientists have begun a controversial atom experiment which some people fear could create a black hole that will swallow the Earth.
This morning boffins flicked the switch (well quite a number of switches) causing atoms to wizz around a 17-mile-long machine at speeds approaching the speed of light.
As the particles - which are traveling in different directions - collide in the large hadron collider, they will recreate the conditions of the big bang 14 billion years ago.
The collisions will briefly take temperatures in the tunnels 100m under Geneva to 100,000 times hotter than the Sun.
It is hoped the information gained could unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe ... that has got to beat whatever are you doing at the office today.
If you lack GCSE physics and are needlessly worried about the end of the planet, you should carry on living in fear - the atom collider has not yet smashing particles together.

well mr anonymous you obviously have more knowledge than the scientists performing the experiment because even they dont know what will happen well even if we only have a small earth quake and only 100mil people die will the experiment be a success i will tell my two very young children that mr annonymous has ensured their safety becuase he/she's soooo clever!
Its an issue of ethics and rights. May be the scientist in question believes it wont harm anyone. But may be he is an eccentric nerd. He has no right to take the whole world to ransom just to fulfill his desire. This is not right. I hope this gets suspended . I know it has started but I believe it should be stopped as soon as possible. Human future on earth can not be held to ransom to an eccentric scientist's wish.No one has right to play nature or God. Obviously the atoms when they collide will not make a black whole, and why? Because who ever has spread that rumour is a dumb kinder gardener. Black wholes are created by some dying stars. A star with a mass greater than 20 times the mass of our Sun may produce a black hole at the end of its life. So this experiment is not going to turn the earth into and elderly man/woman is it? And it is not going to turn the earth 20 times bigger than the sun so no dying earth and no growth to the earth = NO BLACK WHOLE!

As for you, Professor, I disagree. This experiment is a recipe for disaster. There s a 1 in 3 billion chance that a blackhole will happen? Or a 1 in 1 billion chance a core, 3000 times hotter than the Sun will be created, or new life will occur? Well, those nunbers seem pretty pointless. What were the odds that the WTC would collapse on the same date and month of the American number for emergency services? 1 in a trillion? Go back to the drawing boards..

Greetings. I am on the planet Mars, and I have been recently oontacted by your leader, Hitler. He told me that, after escaping death, he built a UFO and flew to planet X, which oddly enough is supposed to 'mark the spot'. This planet was his base for some time. After years of researching, he designed and built a blackhole opener which could suck in planets. In recent years, 'Osama Bin Laden' has been on the run. The person, is indeed Hitler. He has a beard due to the fact that its a long journey from Earth to Planet X. He is now using his contraption to destroy the Earth, while his Nazi terrorists distract the allies. This blackhole opener, is indeed the one in use now, and it WILL open up a blackhole.

The particles colliding above us are not fast enough and not powerful enough to cause a blackhole. However, Hitler's experiment is making the particles travel in a concentrated formation, energised at extremely powerful levels and are travelling a million times faster than the particles above us. Hitler will destroy the world!!
obviously particles are going fast enough, you see light from the sun are particles, therefore when light particles reach earth they would have colided with many in the earths atmosphere and stop talking about hitler he has no connection to logical science therefore he is not within my descoshion of the big bang experiment.

We are in the new galaxy even now, which is why people were sent int to space jsut the other day..to check what the new surrounding space is like. However, scientists, including me are designing a new blackhole opener which will direct us right back to our previous location in the universe. We will, of course, activate a failsafe meaning no-one will be able to open a blackhole in our galaxy, ever.
