Pre-stained pants: Does this idea stink?
If your mother told you to make sure you are always wearing clean underwear she would definitely not approve of these ... they come ready soiled. The 'pre-stained pants' are the brainchild of Philip Watson who came up with the idea while at university, after finding a pair of "horribly skidded" pants in the wash.
He says the idea of being caught with dirty underwear is horribly shaming, and thought that it would be great it there was an excuse to trot out, like "they came that way".
Philip is now selling the pants - which have printed skid-marks on the rear - online, and says demand is better than expected ... but if buyers chose not to change their pants regulary they still have to explain the smell.
The design process saw a pair of freshly soiled white pants taken to an (unfortunate) artist, who redrew it and made it slightly less gross.
Philip said: "Making pre-stained clothing frees people from the embarrassment of having soiled clothing. By selling clothes that come already soiled makes it a personal decision to wear soiled clothing and not a source of embarrassment."
While demand for the £9.50 pants might be high Philip admits that many people don't get what he is trying to do.
"The majority of people seem not to get it. We get a lot of hate mail or atleast mail that points out our shortcomings in glorious detail" he added.
