George Washington gets £195,000 library fine
A library has revealed that George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, was a common library cheat. He borrowed two books from them back in 1789, but never returned them - meaning that to date he would have racked up a $300,000 (£195,000) fine.
Staff at the New York Society Library say they will not chase the fine, but they'd like the books back, if anyone finds them at The White House.
Washington 'borrowed' the books - "Law of Nations," a dissertation on international relations, and a volume of debate transcripts from the UK House of Commons - out on 5 October 1789. They were use back a month later.
Lending records show he didn't book them out properly either, rather than signing his name an aide simply wrote "President" ... We bet staff had to keep telling hims to be quiet too.
