Spider-Man comic sells for a record $1.1 million
A comic fan has spent a massive $1.1m on a near-mint condition copy of Amazing Fantasy No. 15 featuring the debut of Spider-Man.When the Marvel comic originally went on sale in 1962 it cost just 12 cents - a fay cry from the £679,000 paid on US online auction ComicConnect.com.
The cover features Spidey swinging from a building saying: "The world may mock Peter Parker, the timid teenager… it will soon marvel at the awesome might of Spider-Man."
Comic experts say the value of the comic comes from the fact that is is not only rare but also in amazing condition.
The buyer has chosen to remain anonymous, and we can't blame him, would you want your wife finding out you'd just blown £679,000 on a comic.
"The fact that a 1962 comic has sold for $1.1 million is a bit of a record-shattering event," said ComicConnect.com founder Stephen Fishler."That something that recent can sell for that much and be that valuable is awe-inspiring.
"The late 1950s and early 1960s are considered the Silver Age for comic books, people have often wondered how much this near-perfect condition book would sell for, and today we found out."
The only comic to sell for more is a 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1, featuring Superman's debut, which sold for $1.5 million last year.
