Movies: The Family That Preys, Burn After Reading, Righteous Kill and Towelhead

I’ve been asked to cover this week’s film releases, and while I set out to pan a bunch of movies – after all, September is the dumping ground for the worst of the worst that studios have to offer – I must say that this week is an amazingly good one.

Of all the new releases, I’d recommend Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys more than any other… oh wait, this movie looks God awful. How many more movies can this man make, anyway, before he figures out that he’s just not very good at it?
In all seriousness – or as much as can be allowed – Burn After Reading is the must-see film of the weekend. The star-studded comedy thriller stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich and many others, but most noticeable is the fact that it’s the follow-up to the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men from directors Joel and Ethan Coen.

Combine the Coen brothers and Brad’s ridiculous hairdo and you have yourself a winner, folks.

Close behind, though, is Righteous Kill, a serial killer movie that sees the rare teaming of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, as two cops who are hunting a vigilante that likes to murder bad guys.

The pairing of these two classic actors is sensational enough, but it’s also good to see De Niro back in a serious film. That being said, its early September release date is ominous, and De Niro might have to wait for Analyze Those before having another true hit on his hands.

Finally, in limited release, we have the politically correct Towelhead, from American Beauty writer Alan Ball. Sex, racism, drama, comedy and Aaron Eckhart as a Two Face-creepy neighbor make this one another must-see.
