Movies: The Golden Globes Suck, Long Live My Opinion

By Erik Samdahl
The Golden Globe nominations were released this week, and there were a few odd choices. Where was The Dark Knight, the critical and box office darling that has been gathering steam over the last month? If not Best Drama, then at least Best Director and Best Original Score.
Tom Cruise is nominated for Best Supporting Actor, an odd choice considering that even though he was one of the highlights of the movie, he wasn’t that good. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a movie that received lukewarm reviews, got nominated for Best Comedy.
Thankfully, In Bruges, the Colin Farrell-starring comedy that no one in the U.S. saw except for my roommate and I, landed three nominations.
And what about Milk, the Sean Penn-starring drama that is arguably better than Slumdog Millionaire? Penn got a much-deserved nomination, but there’s no room in the Best Drama category for gays, apparently.
Switching gears entirely, December is the month to determine just how respectable the Golden Globes – an awards show that I consider a complete waste of time – should be considered. Having just watched Milk, I thought it was great; and with protests raging over California’s Proposition 8 (which bans gay marriage), the film is still very timely.
Frost/Nixon expands this weekend, and such Oscar hopefuls as Doubt opens. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the movie receiving the most Oscar buzz currently (which also garnered a few Golden Globe nods) premiered, teasing us with the fact that we have to wait two more weeks (well, I got invited to a screening in LA, but unfortunately… I don’t live in LA).
Of course, opening wide – and in IMAX – is The Day the Earth Stood Still. I should have a review on FilmJabber by Sunday.
