Movies: Jason Unleashes Terror Upon Shopaholics and Banks

By Erik Samdahl
It’s the weekend of Friday the 13th, in more ways than one. Following the horrific but financially successful Freddy vs. Jason, the masked killer returns to the big screen in a reimagining of one of the longest running franchises of all time.
In Friday the 13th, Jason stalks a bunch of young, horny and high people who have traveled to Crystal Lake to relax and get trashed. What is essentially a remake of Friday the 13th Part III, the movie meets expectations: there’s plenty of nudity, lots of gruesome murders and… well, that’s about it.
The acting isn’t terrible, but it isn’t great either. Still, this is the kind of movie you should watch in a crowded theater; rarely will you get to experience such a rowdy crowd who ooh, aw and snicker at the massacre that ensues.
If horror isn’t your cup of tea, you unfortunately don’t have much to choose from. The International is receiving okay reviews, which is about all that can be expected for a generic-looking thriller such as this. Clive Owen stars alongside Naomi Watts as a man who becomes determined to takedown a corrupt bank. Timely? Yes. Good? That remains to be seen. The movie looks like a B-grade Bond reject film.
For the ladies out there, there is one film that you can take your man to if you wish to punish him on Valentine’s Day: Confessions of a Shopaholic. This movie actually looks mindlessly entertaining, but it also looks like an SNL skit that goes for an hour and a half. Isla Fisher leads the way as a woman who drowns herself in credit card debt, all the way to a 21% rotten rating on RottenTomatoes.com.
If I were you, stick with the expected: Friday the 13th. If you must, hit up The International. To punish yourself, go see Confessions of a Shopaholic.
