Movies: Knowing, Duplicity and Love are Themes of the Week
By Erik SamdahlThree major releases open this weekend, each with potential to be hits. After the previous weekend which offered little in the way of mainstream appeal, the studios release simultaneous films that all could be good if done right.
Knowing, starring Nicolas Cage, is about a man who discovers a piece of paper that predicts every major disaster over the last 50 years. The question is, what happens when the numbers run out? Cage’s career choices are unpredictable, though Knowing looks to be on par with Next, a similarly themed movie that was surprisingly decent but forgettable. If it has enough suspense and is halfway plausible, it may be worthwhile.
Those looking for some R-rated laughs is I Love You, Man, starring funnymen Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. Considering these guys starred in two of my favorite comedies last year – Role Models and Forgetting Sarah Marshall – this one is a must-see. About an almost-married man who realizes he has no guy friends to be his best man, I Love You, Man looks to have the same wit and charm as other similar comedies from the last couple of years.
Lastly, for adults not interested in a profanity-laden laughfest, there’s Duplicity, which stars Julia Roberts and Clive Owen as former spies who are hired at two competing competitions with the intention of robbing their employers blind. Duplicity, from the director of Michael Clayton and the writer of the three Bourne films, looks to have the charm, wit and creativity of Ocean 11.
Of the three, Duplicity is the film of choice this weekend – if I don’t go see them all.
