Gadgets: BumpTop
By Jay GarrettWell, what's been happening over the last week then?
For a start, Google looks like it wants to buy Twitter which would make the live search almost 'as it happens' as I've witnessed truly breaking news unfold on the micro-blogging site.
Here in the UK the first robot scientist has researched and tested its own hypothesis. It's only a matter of time before it writes its own request for a research grant to prove that bees can't fly or something ;)
We could be seeing a new Sony PSP by Christmas which might be packing a sliding touchscreen and a pair of analogue thumb-sticks. Continuing in the world of handhelds: The usual iPhone rumours continue this week bolstered by the 'fact' that a bunch of bits are being shipped to Apple's assembley line in China.
Sparked by my Yorkshire-side of loving free-things (or things that dunt cost owt) and my Canadian patriotism I decided to check out BumpTop.
BumpTop, Created by Toronto, Ontario-based Bump Technologies, is a groovy Windows overlay that adds a third dimension to the flat Windows desktop of yours has walls to decorate and the ability to stack up files and folders - a lot like OS X stacks.
My desktop is one of the few places that I keep organised but I’m digging the layout of having a cubicle style desktop - I’m a sucker for funkiness .
So, your old desktop now becomes the floor which is surrounded by three walls.
Shortcut and file icons now look like cards which you can pick up and place anywhere.
You can chuck them about with a flick of your mouse (they’ll bounce off of the walls if you sling them too hard). You can even stack them on top of each other in piles – unfortunately there's no carpet yet to shove them under.
The walls are used for hanging items. You can drag any file onto the wall to hang it there or you can hang some photo frames. The picture-frames grab pics from ‘My Pictures’ and Picasa or Flickr files via RSS feed or a keyword.
I really dig the Post-It notes for writing reminders and sticking them to the walls.
With the special printer, Facebook, Twitter and email wall icons, you can simply throw a file at them to have that file sent to that application.
A file that's slung to the printer icon will be printed, added as an attachment with the e-mail icon, and uploaded to your account with either the Facebook or Twitter icons.
I’m playing with the light, free version (aye lad, free), of the app but am definetly considering the more powerful version that only costs $29 eh?
Go to BumpTop to try it yourself.
Have a Happy Easter!
