Movies: Earth gets cut but don't get Obsessed by violence

As we gear up the major month that is known as May (because that’s the month I was born, not because of all the big blockbusters being released, of course), studios decide that rather than rely on the tried and true, they’ll subject us to some major crap.

Several films open wide in the United States to some degree or another, starting with Earth, the Disney documentary that looks and sounds a lot like the popular mini-series Planet Earth, probably because it is just a shortened version of it. Given how amazing Planet Earth is supposed to be, I don’t know why you’d want to spend money to see an abbreviated version – other than the visuals will be even more stunning on the big screen.

For those looking for more violence, there are several to choose from, including Fighting, The Informers, Mutant Chronicles and Obsessed. Fighting starts Channing Tatum, and its title explains exactly why you should avoid this one. The Informers looks interesting only because it features starlet Amber Heard showing more [flesh] than most guys could dream of, but otherwise it looks like a pretty sleazy drug thriller. The Mutant Chronicles looks a lot like The Chronicles of Riddick only much, much worse, and with a B-grade cast (sorry, Hellboy) and crappy graphics.

Obsessed, on the other hand, looks halfway decent, even if it appears to be a remake of Fatal Attraction. The plus side is that we most likely will see Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter in a mud wrestling fight. To be fair, though, Obsessed does look like it could be an entertaining – if forgettable – erotic thriller.

Lastly, there’s The Soloist, the much-delayed drama about a journalist (Robert Downey Jr.) who befriends a mentally unstable but brilliant violinist and cellist (Jamie Foxx). The movie is from Joe Wright, who did Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, so this one has major potential to actually be good. Its release date is a bit worrisome, however.

That’s all… until next week.
