Movies: I'd Rather Have The Hangover Than Watch Land Of The Lost
By Erik SamdahlWho wants to get drunk while ruining your life in the land of the lost? I don’t. Of the three major releases this week, only The Hangover looks promising. Oh, and a limited-release film by some guy named Sam Mendes.
The Hangover stars Andy from “The Office” (no, sorry, the American version) along with that guy who’s rumored to play Green Lantern in a comedy where three buddies lose their friend – the bachelor at an upcoming wedding – in Vegas. Hilarity ensues, allegedly. The Hangover looks pretty good, but it also looks like something that could wait until DVD, too.
Over the years I’ve learned to never underestimate Sam Mendes, who has directed such classics as American Beauty, Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road. We’ll ignore Jarhead.
As such, we should all be excited for Away We Go, starring Jim from “The Office” (the American version! Holy crap). The romantic dramedy is about a couple who have to deal with the ups and downs of life. The movie looks quite a bit different from Mendes’ other films, but still quite worthy.
Especially when we have the likes of Land of the Lost and My Life in Ruins in theaters. I’ll admit that Land of the Lost looks sort of entertaining, but the Will Ferrell sci-fi adventure comedy more than likely used up all of its laughs in its marketing material. It could be mindless fun, or it could be mind numbing. It’s hard to tell.
Certainly, though, one can skip My Life in Ruins, which marks Nia Vardalos’ return from nowhere after dropping onto the stage in My Big Fat Greek Wedding so many years ago. I haven’t seen any promotion for this film whatsoever, and based on the trailer, I can see why. It looks cliché, uninteresting and a desperate attempt to be more than a one-hit wonder.
