Gadgets: The CD Case That is Actually a DVD Writer

200x175By Jay Garrett

Hello again gadgety faithful!

I survived the Latitude Festival and a few gigs with my band Subset and will soon be off to Knebworth for Sonisphere.

“What's been happening in the gadgety world Jay?” I hear you ask.

Well, since we last met I had a tour around Sony's operations in Stuttgart and brought back a UK exclusive, Samsung are aiming to undercut LG's wristphone with their S9110, the Modu modular mobile has gone on sale and official pics of LG's tasty Chocolate BL40 have been released.

As usual there's been Apple product rumours.  More whispers about the iPad Apple Tablet reckon that this device could be here next year or even before Christmas!  The iPhone Nano has also come back to the surface after a patent has been spotted.
200x190.jpgToday I bring you a very slim and luggable DVD writer from Pioneer.

The freshly announced XD09 measures in at 5.24 x 0.58 x 5.24-inches and 8 ounces, or only just slightly heftier than the average CD case.

Pioneer claims that it’s the most compact drive design yet and it certainly looks like it.

This means if you carry your optical media around with you just use this as the case and when you get to where you’re going to all you'd have to do is hook the ‘case’ up to the puter and Robert is your mother’s brother you're ready to go!

It connects and gets power via USB 2.0, so there’s no need to worry over a burdensome AC adapter that could weigh more than the actual device. The drive supports discs as large as 8.5GB via its dual layer DVD-R support.

The drive is actually quite speedy for a portable, with an 8x max DVD writer speed and a 24x max CD write speed; it will be available next month for $79.99.
